I also enjoy advanced mathematics, and I have very much enjoyed teaching calculus, linear algebra, probability, abstract algebra, and topology. In college, science majors spend their time learning complicated subjects like Calculus, Physics and Chemistry. The calculus was certainly worth-while, but that was only like a quarter of the work. I've really enjoyed the discussion on my post from yesterday about MOOCs and how I predict they are going to affect the education world. You notice your notes flow more easily and it's more comfortable to do things you don't enjoy, like Calculus (or art if you're an alpha-nerd who needs to die). I say this as a former mathematician and someone who really enjoyed learning calculus. My intended audience here is others who are about to teach Calculus at Michigan, or people who are wondering what it would be like to set up a Michigan-style program in their own departments.
